Goldberg vs The Undertaker, Thoughts and Opinions

Goldberg vs The Undertaker finally happened.

And everyone is being way too harsh.

When this match was announced I was super excited of course, with The Undertaker being my favorite wrestler of all time. I had imagined Goldberg would be facing Bobby Lashley, and would've been excited for that match to, but this was the right way to go in my head. It was the match I was anticipating the most. Supershowdown came around and rightfully so, it got the main event spot, as expected.

The match began, and I was quite worried that it wouldn't last long considering it began with two spears by Goldberg. Thankfully, The Undertaker kicked out, and they both started going through their moves, and some hard hitting punches. As the match progressed, it was clear something was off, and there were a few miscommunications or mess-ups it seemed. Things slowly crumbled a little bit at the last few moments, and the match ended with an anti-climactic chokeslam.

Now all of a sudden, it's deemed the "worst match of the year" or the "worst match ever" by some fans. People went quick to bash it and pointed out all of the dangerous moments and botches that happened. This is a common problem when people go about judging a match quality, in my opinion. If the wrong person won, the match sucked. If there was a botch, the match was bad. If there was a weird spot, the match was awful. Apparently, one or a few bad moments automatically deem any positive aspects irrelevant and futile. I have a theory as well that if Roman Reigns had prevailed again in the 2018 Royal Rumble (when he was still disliked), which he was close to doing so, then the Royal Rumble would've been considered one of the worst. But, alas, Shinsuke won the Rumble so now it is considered one of the best. Every thing beforehand is thrown out the window in favor for one definitive moment, which is frustrating. Nothing else is taken into consideration.

Perhaps some fans were not happy with the few moments that appeared dangerous or botched, so to speak, but the match was pretty solid up until those moments. The Undertaker and Goldberg are such big legends that they don't need to be doing missile dropkicks or 450 splashes (I just got a visual of The Undertaker doing a 450 splash XD) Their presence alone is enough to make the match great and have a story present. There may have been some awkward moments, but it was still going relatively good at first. They were each going through their moves, Undertaker's old school, the double clothesline spot etc. Let's acknowledge these moments when analyzing the match quality, instead of eliminating them all together in favor for the negative aspects of the match. Yes, the ending was super abrupt and i wasn't a fan either, and some moments were awkward, but I can acknowledge that they were doing their best to keep up the pace with one another and put a good match together.

So yes, the match wasn't the greatest, and some can say it was bad, bur the worst? I'd say that's a stretch. Side note here, many have already pointed it out, but I love the rock paper scissors aspect between The Undertaker, Goldberg, and Brock Lesnar. Brock > Taker, Goldberg > Brock,
Taker  > Goldberg

They are both legends, and it sucks to see them being bashed so harshly for this one match. We don't know the extent of the possible injury on Goldberg, and how it may have affected the match. We also don't know what The Undertaker's decisions are in real life, so it might really be him that continues to wrestle for his own pleasure, which is respectable, and i'll always get excited to see it. So it just confuses me why people assume he's being held hostage or something by Vine McMahon, forced to wrestle. I'm sure he holds enough power already to decided when he wrestles and when he doesn't.

In conclusion, everyone has the right to have an opinion, but perhaps keep in mind the potential positive aspects of things instead of just picking apart the negative. And also, these are real people behind these characters, and they have lives and family as well, so there's no need to say such harsh things.

Until next time, HT reviewer.
